PHOENIX COMMUNITY COFFEE FAQ SHEET

1. Where is the coffee grown?

Answer: The Cloud drenched region of Nicaragua @ 4,200 feet in elevation

2. Where is the coffee roasted?

Answer: In Duluth, GA @ The Phoenix Community Coffee Roastery.

3. Is the coffee “Fair Trade?”

Answer: Fair trade has become a nebulas term full of bureaucratic red tape. If you are asking is the coffee purchased at an ethical price and if the farmers and pickers cared for and known by our partners? Then yes. Our coffee was once ranked the number one Central American Starbucks bean. Our team of roasters convinced Vida Joven coffee farm to let us pay them three times as much for their coffee than Starbucks was. This is why we consider our coffee “Ethically traded” rather than fair trade.

4. How do the farmers in Nicaragua use the extra money?

Answer: In addition to paying ethical wages to the migrant pickers, they use the money to create scholarships for Nicaraguan children to go to YOUNG LIFE camp and help with their education, and to learn about the love of Christ.

5. Is the coffee “Shade grown?”

Answer: It is shade grown (meaning there are banana trees planted throughout the fields creating a canopy over the coffee plants), and it has recently received the name “Cloud Grown” which is given to coffee that receives shorter amounts of sun due to the mist and the clouds in the higher elevations in this region of the world.

6. What does shade grown or cloud grown mean to the taste and quality of the coffee itself?

Answer: The longer the bean remains on the plant during the growing season, the more indigenous flavor it draws from the soil, and the richer the flavor and more distinguishable it is from other coffee. Therefore the slower it grows the better.

7. When does a coffee bean begin to age?

Answer: The day it is roasted

8. How old is the average bag of coffee in the grocery store?

Answer: It depends. Anywhere from 4 months to a year old

9. How old will our coffee be?

Answer: 3 days to one week depending on the timely delivery of your student

10. What is the best way to prepare quality coffee and why?

Answer: French Press. Because the water stays in contact with the coffee for four minutes before pressing the grounds to the bottom of the container where in a drip maker, the coffee only touches the coffee for a few seconds before it pours out.

11. What is the number one secret to making a quality cup of coffee?

Answer: Filtered or spring water (not distilled) and of course YOUR PREMIUM, FRESH ROASTED COFFEE from your organization!

12. What makes Phoenix Community Coffee a better fundraising option than any other?

Answer: In addition to the global missional good that we represent, coffee is the second highest traded commodity in the world. In other words, people in your church and on your street are already purchasing and using your fundraiser multiple times a day…but until now you haven’t received any money toward your great cause!

13. Ok. How much money do we make on each pound sold?

Answer: $4 per pound
